Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), also known as butterfly weed or orange milkweed, is a hardy native perennial wildflower in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). This bushy plant typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall, featuring erect, hairy stems with narrow, lance-shaped, dark green leaves and distinctive flat-topped clusters of vibrant orange (sometimes reddish or yellowish) flowers that bloom from late spring through summer. Unlike other milkweeds, it lacks the characteristic milky sap, instead producing a watery one, and it develops from a deep, tuberous taproot that makes it highly drought-tolerant. It thrives in dry, well-drained soils such as sandy or rocky prairies, open woodlands, meadows, roadsides, and grasslands across much of eastern and central North America. Ecologically important, Butterfly Milkweed serves as a vital nectar source for a wide range of pollinators, including bees, hummingbirds, and especially butterflies, while also acting as a larval host plant for monarch butterflies, whose caterpillars feed exclusively on its foliage. Its bright blooms and ecological value make it a popular choice for native plant gardens and pollinator habitats.

  • Appearance: This bushy perennial features vibrant orange (sometimes yellow or red-orange) flowers in large, flat-topped clusters atop hairy stems, with narrow, lance-shaped green leaves and no milky sap unlike other milkweeds.
  • Height and Growth: It typically grows 1-3 feet tall in upright clumps, forming a low, mounded profile from a deep tuberous root system that makes it drought-tolerant once established.
  • Habitat and Conditions: Native to eastern and southern North America, it thrives in dry to medium, well-drained soils such as sand, loam, or rocky areas, preferring full sun and tolerating poor, dry conditions exceptionally well.
  • Pollinator Benefits: A favorite for butterflies, it serves as a larval host plant for monarch caterpillars and provides abundant nectar for adult butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators.
  • Quality: All seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.5" wide by 5" tall.
  • Promise: Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
